Colchicum autumnale 'Alboplenum'
Known as Autumn Crocus or Naked Lady, this intriguing bulbous plant blooms in the fall, typically from September to October. The white flowers resemble crocuses but are larger. 'Alboplenum' features double, white flowers resembling a gardenia. The bulb can be placed on a tray to bloom without soil or water. After blooming, it should be planted 15 cm deep in a well-drained flower bed.
In spring, a rosette of leaves forms and should be left to wither down to provide energy for the fall blooms. The entire plant, including both flowers and leaves, contains colchicine, a toxin used in medications for gout. The flower height is around 10 cm, with the leaf rosette reaching about 20 cm.
