The Flower Fakir is used in the Japanese art form Ikebana, which means "to make flowers come alive." It's all about arranging plants beautifully, but it's also a philosophy and lifestyle—similar to yoga and meditation—that is gaining greater recognition in the West. Ikebana encourages us to stop, focus, and appreciate. Sustainability and minimalism are key concepts based on thought and feeling. Much like the Japanese tea ceremony, Ikebana offers multiple layers of meaning. No prior knowledge is required; Ikebana invites you to create and be creative within an aesthetic that fits our time, always.
How does it work? Choose a plant or two, perhaps something you find in your garden, by the roadside, or at the flower shop. It doesn't have to be a lot. By placing a stem or branch on the pins, the plant can stand upright without any additional support, allowing the entire plant to be expressed. According to Ikebana, we aim to be present in the moment, in stillness and focus.
Place the Flower Fakir in a bowl, plate, or wherever you wish. It can sit in the center or perhaps you prefer another spot. Experiment with different placements. Add water. If you use a wider vessel, a beautiful water reflection will form. A narrower vase could also be your choice. When a plant dies, you can easily remove it and perhaps replace it with another. This encourages care and sustainability.
