Our planting tips!

Garlic, Allium sativum, is best grown in deeply worked, humus- and nutrient-rich sandy soil. In heavy, wet soil, garlic is at risk of rotting during the winter.

The recommended planting time is mid-September in northern Sweden, mid-October in central Sweden, and November in southern Sweden. Planting too early can lead to too much autumn growth, increasing the risk of winter damage.

Divide the bulb into cloves with the root end facing down, covering them with about 5 cm of soil. Plant cloves 10–15 cm apart, with rows spaced 35–40 cm apart. Use well-rotted compost or organic fertilizer at planting. Fertilize early when shoots appear — even at snowmelt, you can apply chicken manure or chrysan. Grass clippings also help retain moisture and add nutrients. Additional fertilizing before midsummer is beneficial. Garlic is nutrient-demanding and does not tolerate drought.

It’s time to harvest when the tops start to yellow, usually from mid-July to early August. Don’t leave it in the soil too long, as the outer protective skin may split, increasing the risk of mold. Let the bulbs dry thoroughly in a warm, airy place for about two weeks. Dry room temperature is ideal.
