Our planting tips!
Garlic, Allium sativum, grows best in deeply worked, humus- and nutrient-rich sandy soil. If planted in heavy, wet soil, the garlic risks rotting during winter.
The recommended planting time is mid-September in northern Sweden, mid-October in central Sweden, and November in southern Sweden. If planted too early, the garlic may grow too much in autumn and become more susceptible to winter damage.
Separate the bulb into cloves with the root end down, covering them with about 5 cm of soil. Plant with 10–15 cm spacing between cloves and 35–40 cm between rows. Use well-composted organic matter or natural fertilizer at planting. Fertilize early when the garlic starts sprouting — even at snowmelt, you can apply chicken manure or chrysan. Grass clippings also help retain moisture and add nutrients. Fertilize a couple more times before midsummer. Garlic is nutrient-demanding and does not tolerate drought.
Harvest when the tops start to yellow — mid-July to early August. Don't leave it in the soil too long, as the outer protective skin can crack and lead to mold. Let the garlic dry thoroughly in a warm, airy place for about two weeks. Ideal drying conditions are dry room temperature.
