Papaver orientale ‘Patty’s Plum’
Poppy ‘Patty’s Plum’ is a beautiful perennial with exquisite, plum-purple petals and a dark central eye. A stately and highly desirable poppy for the garden.
Height: 75–100 cm
Growth habit: Deeply lobed, hairy foliage that dies back after flowering (applies to all oriental poppies). The seed pods are decorative when dried and in arrangements.
Flowering period: June–July
Position: Full sun in well-drained, light soil. Drought tolerant.
Plant spacing: 35 cm
Additional notes: Deer resistant and slug resistant. Attractive to butterflies and beneficial for pollinators.
Important - The bare-root plant should be planted as soon as possible after you bring it home, as the roots are sensitive to drying out. If the ground is frozen, you can plant it in a pot and place it in a bright, cool location. It also works well to keep the roots in the bag. Lightly mist the roots and store the bag in a cool, dark place.
At sub-zero temperatures, we include a heat pack in the parcel at no extra cost to prevent the giant poppies (bare root) from freezing during delivery.
Soak the roots in room-temperature water before planting. Long roots may be trimmed slightly, but should not be bent. Place the buds or crown just below the soil surface. Position the pot in sun to partial shade; in the garden it also thrives in sun or partial shade. Use light, well-aerated soil and choose a well-drained spot that is not too wet. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy, and increase watering as the plant establishes and produces more foliage.
